Braces generally don’t hurt, however they will make your mouth sore for a few days. The soreness stems from the added pressure on your teeth which allows them to shift. The good thing is that this pain doesn’t last for too long! Soreness can be alleviated by rinsing your mouth with warm salt-water. All you have to do is take a teaspoon of salt, stir it into a glass (8oz.) of warm water, and rinse! If pain persists or increases you may want to take some Advil or Tylenol.

If you are unsure of what to take, it is best that you contact your doctor for advice. The inside of your mouth is susceptible to scratches caused by your braces. Your lips, gums, tongue, and/or cheeks can be a victim of your mouth becoming accustomed to your braces. This is nothing to worry about, as it is very common with those who have braces. The best solution to avoid irritation is to place wax on the part of your braces which is making contact with the certain part of your mouth. This should prevent any sort of scratching. There are other remedies such as oral rinses which help heal soreness as well. Before using any oral rinse, it is best if you speak to your doctor first.
